Lore Primer - WORK IN PROGRESS

For starters, this is not a full, comprehensive guide of the server's lore, just the most essential bits that are crucial, foundation parts of the setting and key to making a character fit in. While we don't want to make it mandatory to do extensive reading to just play on the server, it's encouraged you give this a look-over, if nothing else.

The information below is highly advised for you to read if you're new to the server!

  • The year is 2823 (subject to change, as we're considering an alternative date-system and calendar.) The Great Pool, (or in traditional terms, the "galaxy") at large remains unexplored, but the small section Humanity and its' adjacents have explored is ever-expanding, both inwards and outwards. After centuries of strife and expansion, the Orion Arm seems to have finally calmed, weapons put down, Resonance Gates opened, and the stage set for the events of the Olympus Gate (your workplace) to unfold.
  • Space travel remains quite difficult, and simply escaping a solar system was a monumental task, even decades after the first satellites had been launched. Old ties die hard, and the promise of expansion into space was quite a challenge early on. Despite this, when Humanity discovered Plasma in 2063, everything changed. The element had been happened upon almost by accident by a manned vessel out in Jupiter's orbit, and once samples were taken, news of the new element quickly took Earth by storm. Fledgling colonies were able to boom with the new ease of power Plasma offered, and prototypes began to take shape for faster-than-light travel. Colony ships, some with dangerous, prototype Resonance Drives, were thrown together despite the dangers, and laws were set up governing the regulation of Plasma - laws that were quick to be broken.
  • Many of the original Human colony ships made it to nearby systems, beginning the arduous process of colonization - many of which didn't make it. Despite the many factions in a silent power struggle over Earth, many of these colonies had distinct allegiances - and by the time the Resonance Gate network had began construction, contact had already been made through use of long-distance communications, allowing for communication between the colonies - albeit slow. As conditions on Earth stabilized, it began the arrival of the Gate Crews, forerunners who went out to colonies and other points of interest in Space to set up new Resonance Gates, a new, safer, stationary form of FTL. With the Gates under-way, foremost of the remaining powers on Earth, [NAME UNDECIDED] went on to found the [NAME UNDECIDED], which would represent Humanity's interests as a whole on the wider galactic stage. Reports of alien life had trickled in, but it wasn't until 10 years that the first confirmed contact was had - with the Jinans in their home-system, by one of the Gate Crews following a colony ship.
  • Following first contact, many new species were discovered, and over the many centuries spanning since then, the Resonance Gate network has spread, connecting the many light-years of the comfortable bubble of the Orion Arm together with safe travel. Through it all, many people have made grabs for power, and under the new-found safety and comfort of the Resonance Gate Network, corporations fought for silent control over the governments. The victors remain below any official galactic power or government, yet still remain in near-complete economic control over the known reaches of the Great Pool, coming to own or overpower everything smaller than themselves - any crumbs being snatched up. The companies relevant to you would be Daedalus Industries, Hermes Galactic, Mars Executive, Aether Assocation, Ananke A.T., and Priapus Recreational.
How this relates to you

You are (most likely) an employee on-board Platform Olympus, the adjutant to Resonance Gate Olympus - one of many gates around the explored Great Pool, designed and manufactured for the purpose of flinging ships across the stars in the only known safe method of FTL travel. Daedalus Industries owns these Gates and their respective platforms, and the other companies have agreed to contract with Daedalus for the purposes of staffing these. Your character might belong to any of the corporations, or possibly some unlisted, more minor one - maybe they're even a freelancer or otherwise unassociated, though not all departments will accept this. Any crew NOT belonging to Ananke A.T. and Mars Executive have volunteered for their position.

Welcome to Daedalus Industries Dock 13.

=== The Orion Arm === The main setting of Daedalus Dock exists in the Orion Arm, the arm of the Milky Way Galaxy that Earth inhabits, though no exploration has been conducted close to the Galactic Core or the end of the Arm. Even so, the explored areas are poorly-known, and the frontier hides countless secrets. Attempts to traverse the dead-zone between the Orion and the Sagittarius have been made, but none have ever returned - or been heard from, transmissions slowly becoming more and more distorted the further away they travelled. Despite the relatively small area covered in comparison to the entire galaxy, a multitude of species have been discovered - a few of which are sentient, and those are as follows:

Ever-Present Humanity

Humanity - that's what you're from, Reader! A fairly unremarkable species in comparison to most others - while physically unassuming, they are highly varied in height, coloration, body markings, hair, etc. They possess as much capability for individualism as they do for shared communal strength. While not the first species to invent space travel, they are largely credited with making it practical and widespread. Similarly, the many Human federations and governments are considered core members of the Concordant Worlds Society. Foremost among these is [placeholder to be reviewed by Kapu/Spyro, govt. responsible for controlling Earth/Sol]

Ethereals

Ethereals, a [DETAILS NOT YET DECIDED - ETHEREAL LORE IS WORK IN PROGRESS.]

Jinans

The Jinans (Jee-nins) are a species of intelligent humanoid reptiles from the planet Jitarai. They are most known for their innovation in the field of robotics, at the time of first contact, they were roughly ~130 Sol years ahead in technology. The Jinan people are dovish, but once angered, prove themselves to be fierce warriors with a strong camaraderie. Having been the ones to expose Humanity to the galactic scale, they are considered core members of the Concordant Worlds Society.

Plasmafolk

A "race" that baffles nigh anyone who tries to make sense of them. Despite Phoron being highly toxic to most known forms of life, Plasmafolk are made of the stuff - and the skeletons of whatever unfortunate species their unique biology happens to use as a framework.

Synthetics, generally

Synthetics are quite a broad category. Narrowing them down is quite difficult, but they're generally accepted as sentient. Except for the ones that aren't.
